Agustín de Iturbide. Miliciano, comandante, primer jefe. Biografía político-militar, 1797-1821

Abstract

What is presented is the biography, limited to the army aspect, of Agustín de Iturbide. It is a history that begins with his entry into military training until his last day as an officer. It is not intended to tell the perspective of the bloodthirsty royalist, the heroic liberator or the despotic Mexican emperor, that we think we know, that is, the great myth of Iturbide. It will reckon the simplest and most modest history of a man who was the father of ten children, the husband of a woman from Valladolid, a elusive student at the seminary, and finally, the son of a man from Navarre and a woman from Patzcuaro. Iturbide sought to stand out for his armed actions and tried to have a better place in the established order. When he was fired and felt displaced, he probes on his own account to have his services recognized by politicians and army officials. After receiving one rejection after another, he took advantage of the situation that opened up in 1820 to lead a movement that would not only achieve the independence of the viceroyalty but would simultaneously bring back the longed-for peace that the insurgent war had seized away eleven years earlier.

Lo que se presenta a continuación es la biografía, acotada al aspecto militar, de Agustín de Iturbide. Es una historia que comienza con su ingreso a la carrera de las armas hasta su último día como oficial. No pretende contar la perspectiva del sanguinario realista, del heroico libertador o del despótico emperador mexicano que se cree conocer, es decir, del gran mito de Iturbide. Se narrará, en cambio, la más sencilla y modesta historia de un hombre, que fue padre de diez hijos, esposo de una vallisoletana, un fugaz alumno del seminario y el hijo de un navarro y una patzcuarense. Un soldado que buscó destacar por sus acciones armadas y trató de encontrar un mejor acomodo dentro del orden establecido, convencido de la causa del rey, el cual, tras ser despedido y sentirse desplazado, buscó por su propia cuenta que sus servicios fueran reconocidos por políticos y funcionarios del gobierno español. No obstante, al recibir negativa tras negativa aprovechó la coyuntura abierta en 1820 para ponerse al frente de un movimiento que no sólo alcanzaría la independencia del virreinato, sino que simultáneamente lograría devolver la suspirada paz que la guerra insurgente había arrebatado once años atrás.
