Obispos, curas, feligreses y transgresores. La iglesia en el obispado de Michoacán durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

This research analyzes the presence and participation of parish priests in a social structure of pyramid shape, where in the apex was present a markedly official religion and as it descends to the base, the practices of alternative religiosity become more remarkable was presented, defined in this research as "local" religiosity, even-until the transgressions of religiosity. The figure of the priest was present from the apex to the base of the social and ecclesiastical structure, played different roles, such as “agglutinative priest", "harmonizer" and "gendarme". The diversity of these practices was situated in a context framed in general processes such as the Bourbon reforms and their implementation in New Spain, but views from the particular perspective of the parish priests, analyzing the participation that these historical agents performed in the process of ecclesiastical and missional reform, encouraging the officers practices, regulating the local practices of the parishioners and denouncing and sometimes sanctioning some transgressions to the religiosity, while that their privileges and jurisdiction were changing. This situation led some mobility and changes in boundaries and contact zones established between the official religion, the congregations practices and the transgressions against the colonial religiosity in the bishopric of Michoacán during the second half of the eighteenth century, triggering changes in parallel in the representations that had the figure of parish priest and of the religious practices should supervise this historical agent.

La presente investigación analiza la presencia y la participación de los curas de parroquia en una estructura social de forma piramidal, donde en la cúspide se presentaba una religiosidad marcadamente oficial y a medida que se desciende a la base se hacen más notables las prácticas de religiosidad alternativas, definidas en esta investigación como religiosidad “local”, hasta llegar –incluso‒ a las transgresiones a la religiosidad. La figura del cura estaba presente desde la cúspide hasta la base de la estructura social y eclesiástica, desempeñado distintos papeles, como el de “cura aglutinador”, “cura armonizador” y “cura gendarme”. La diversidad de estas prácticas se situaba en un contexto enmarcado en procesos generales como el de las reformas borbónicas y su aplicación en la Nueva España, pero vistas desde la perspectiva particular de los curas, analizando la participación que estos agentes históricos tuvieron en el proceso de reforma eclesiástica y misional, fomentando la oficialidad, regulando las prácticas locales de la feligresía y denunciando e incluso sancionando algunas transgresiones a la religiosidad, al mismo tiempo que se sus privilegios y su jurisdicción estaban cambiando. Esta situación propició algunas movilidades y variaciones en las fronteras y zonas de contacto establecidas entre la religiosidad oficial, las prácticas de la feligresía y las transgresiones a la religiosidad colonial en el obispado de Michoacán durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, desencadenando de manera paralela cambios en las representaciones que se tenían de la figura del cura párroco y de las prácticas religiosas que este agente histórico debía vigilar.
